omg, I just discovered there’s another documentary about her life now that she’s out and I cannot turn it on fast enough.
Okay - we know this story is insane. This poor girl was tortured her whole life, and I hope she’s receiving the help and support she needs.
Now, the doc itself was…not well done. Also trigger warning.
*every time it cut to “commercial,” it ended in the middle of the story and came back to the present and we had to build up again - too much jumping back and forth
*she said “tomorrow is my parole hearing” like 18 times
*the reenactments are some of the worst I’ve ever seen. You can CLEARLY see it’s not the actual people; in one closeup, you can clearly see the girl playing gypsy has a mole above her lip which gypsy does not
*they interviewed her grandfather whom she claimed molested her…which seems like a weird choice, then called gypsy and told her he denied it to get her reaction. It just felt like they were trying to drum something up which they didn’t need to do, because her story is crazy and sad enough
*I am still curious why this was not tried as self defense
*they keep showing this photo of a wheelchair in an abandoned room with a spotlight and it’s so bizarre and unnecessary
*her then-partner Ryan is SO sweaty in his interviews, like the hair on his head is physically damn…give the man a towel, guys.
For me, I would watch again because of the content (even getting to know her dad and stepmom and half sister, you can feel their tangible guilt and empathy and care for her), but too much jumping around for my narrative tastes.
What’s so interesting is that she admits to being a good liar and is therefore an unreliable narrator. And the ongoing question, too, is what does she personally remember or what was told to her by her mother?
But she’s also very sweet and earns your trust, and you obviously cannot help but feel awful for her and invested in her life.
Off to watch Life After Lock Up.
